Listen and Learn!

Hello!

Here we are again, back after a short hiatus…

Let’s see…as most of you know, on Highways & Byways I discuss material from the world of news, music, business, cinema – geared towards Spanish speaking learners of English. I also throw in some American slang terms (Slang Selection) from time to time, as well as idiomatic expressions from the business world and lyrics from a pop song.

And every Friday there’s Flashback, where we travel back in time and look at the news, trends, and music that were taking place at the time.

As a learner of Spanish myself, listening to Spanish language radio broadcasts has improved my ability to understand the language a lot. And it’s still improving. So my advice to you, learners of English: keep your ears open! Over time, you’ll really be able to notice your improvements.

Recently on Highways and Byways…

A colleague, Richard Brown, was recently on the show and we discussed the September 9 launch of the Vaughan Systems English Course (El Curso Definitivo), sold through El Mundo newspaper. At your newspaper stand be sure to ask for your free book, DVD + CD audio + MP3. You can find more information at:

www.elmundo.es/promociones/vaughan/

Also on Highways and Byways we just recently finished looking at slang terms from the world of food and drink in the USA. It took me back to the days when I used to drink beer out of long neck bottles and pig out (ponerse las botas) on pizza on Friday nights.

In the business segment we’ve recently spoken about the importance of creating a company website so that it reflects your company, as well as choosing the right first job.

In the music segment we looked at the song Tunnel of Love by Bruce Springsteen, where we learned the words “stool” (taburete), “dove” (paloma) and…how do say “acurrucarse” in English? Cuddle up! You see, that’s what you do in a tunnel of love; you cuddle up with your girlfriend or your boyfriend. Or as Springsteen says, with your “little dove...ride down baby into this tunnel of love.”

Coming up in the music segment keep an ear out, as we go back to look at the stories behind the songs that reached the number one position on the charts in the USA. Who’s it going to be?

Keep listening and keep learning!
