U2 Strikes Gold in Madrid

Yes, that was the headline of the article. I’ll never forget it.

It was published in the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper on October 31, 1988, announcing the premiere of U2’s concert movie “Rattle and Hum.” I was sitting at my desk at the office, having a cup of coffee when I read it. It immediately caught my eye and I tore the article out and pinned it up on my bulletin board. I was preparing my move to Spain and this exciting event helped fuel my desire to return to Madrid.

I was 22 years old.

I still have that clipping. In fact, I’m looking at it right now as I write this. It’s old and yellowing, and I can’t quite believe I’ve managed to keep track of it all these years.

Fast-forward 20 years.

U2 Strikes Gold in Madrid, v. 2.0

Now I’m 42 years old and things have come full circle: U2 struck gold in Madrid last night with the premiere of their film “U2 3D.”

Thanks to the folks at Yelmo Cineplex, I had the chance to experience U2 in three dimensions. And what an experience it was! I’ll cut out an article marking last night’s event and pin it up on my bulletin board, just like I did in 1988.

Who knows? With so much energy, creativity and longevity, U2 just may find a way to strike gold yet again in Madrid twenty years from now.

I’d be 62 years old and have another press clipping for my bulletin board.

To tear out. Arrancar
Bulletin board. Tablón de anuncios
To fuel. Estimular, provocar
Clipping. Recorte de prensa
To yellow. Ponerse amarrillo
