By 1970 Eric Clapton was a superstar -or even a God- as depicted in graffiti sprayed on walls throughout the UK.

He was also tired of this superstar status and wanted to disappear and become unknown. His answer was Delaney and Bonnie, two white soul singers he could jam and blend in with.

In an attempt to become anonymous, Eric Clapton changed his name to Derek.

But by May of 1970, Clapton’s attempt at anonymity had failed. He was once again in the limelight, overshadowing Delaney and Bonnie. Before long, he found himself at the height of stardom -he’d experienced it before with The Yardbirds, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and Cream- and this time it was with the band Derek and the Dominos.

Looking for a hideout and a change of perspective, Derek and the Dominos went to Miami, Florida, to try out some new songs and sounds. One day, while jamming in the studio, the song Layla just came together. The song represented one of the many Clapton tracks that referenced his unrequited love for George Harrison’s wife, Patti Boyd.

The idea for the song Layla comes from an Arabian love story called Layla and the Majnun.

The recording sessions in Miami represented one of those Great Moments in rock n’ roll history. It was the perfect culmination of emotion, talent and improvisation. And to top it all off, Duane Allman was introduced into the mix, providing red-hot guitar licks that, along with Clapton’s, would go down in history.

The jam sessions took place at Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida, between August and September 1970 and resulted in the LP Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, released in December 1970. While it didn’t chart in the UK, the album reached number 16 in the U.S.

When asked about those unique recording sessions in the fall of 1970, Karl Richardson, the studio engineer, said: “You couldn’t not know that the music flying out of studio B was phenomenal. You’d have to be deaf.”

Eric Clapton and Patti Boyd eventually got married, but the marriage didn’t last very long.

And neither did Derek and the Dominos.

They broke up in 1971 after only one year together.
